Tools And Techniques Used in Problem Solving - PROVEN STRATEGIES that work! Plus Easily Learn the 5 Techniques to Problem Solving and Much More!!

"Successful people are not people without problems. They have simply learned to deal with their problems by recognizing that their power is greater than the power within problems."
-
Earl Nightingale

We all face difficult situations at some point in our lives. Learning general problem solving skills can help you improve your ability to cope with every area of your life. Imagine how empowering it would to turn a negative situation into a positive? By using problem solving techniques you can start dealing effectively with problems or issues which might otherwise seem huge, overwhelming or very complex.

These tools give you a starting point in problem solving which allows you to take control of the situation instead of allowing the situation to control you. These tools are a must-have for managers and HR professionals and, really, anyone dealing with people.

Below you will find a few helpful FREE Problem Solving TIPS and problem solving tools. I am NOT going to give you techniques like Systems Diagrams, SWOT Analysis, Cash Flow Forecasting and Risk Analysis for two reasons: 1) from the feedback I have gotten, they can actually be very confusing and a bit overwhelming for many and 2) you can find lots of information about these techniques on the internet, so I would rather not duplicate efforts.

EASY TO FOLLOW, Step-by-Step Techniques & Strategies
What I am giving you, however are unique, very EASY TO FOLLOW, step-by-step techniques that are VERY effective. You won’t find these Tools And Techniques Used in Problem Solving in most books or manuals -they tend to have rather dull and complicated problem solving processes.

In the Personal Growth Strategies eBook you’ll get a series of Tools And Techniques Used in Problem Solving (including some powerful visualization strategies and imagining and problem solving techniques) that will help you tackle and solve any problem that comes your way.

If you are looking for a basic guidline to solving problems, then the 5 Techniques to Problem Solving Model might just do the trick. Remember, like any model, this is only a guideline and it should not be a substitute for common sense and intuition. A good problem-solving model can aid you in making a sound decision while considering all the risks, advantages, and outcomes of a variety of scenarios.

5 Techniques to Problem Solving

STEP 1: Identify and Clarify the Problem First recognize that a problem exists or something needs to be solved. The first step in reaching a solution is pinpointing the problem area. Gather information. Learn more about the problem situation.

- Evaluate the Evidence. Where did the information come from? Does it represent various points of view? What biases could be expected from each source? How accurate is the information gathered? Is it fact or opinion?

STEP 2: Consider Alternatives and Implications Look for possible causes and solutions. Several different possible ways of solving the problem or grabbing an opportunity should be identified. Pros and cons of each alternative should be considered objectively. (consider cost, time, legal or ethical issues, company goals etc.). Check that implementing the decision will achieve the desired results.

STEP 3: Select the Best Alternative Draw conclusions from the gathered evidence and possible solutions. Then, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative. What are the costs, benefits, and consequences? What are the obstacles, and how can they be handled? Most important, what solution best serves your goals and those of your organization? Here's where your creativity is especially important

STEP 4: Implement the Decision - Take Action After you select an alternative, put it into action. Many decisions are made, but never implemented. See that you follow-up with good planning. This is the stage of acting on your decision. Many people fear making mistakes and failure. Instead we can view every action as an experiment. If one of our overall goals in life is learning and growth, then we can never fail to learn.

STEP 5: Follow Up & Feedback Was the problem solved? Part of good problem solving is giving it time to work. Make sure you review the outcomes and reflect upon the success of the chosen action and what was learned from the situation. If the problem or issue is still not solved or new problems arise, make the necessary changes and evaluate the outcomes. ALWAYS LEARN something POSITIVE from the problem.

Remember, Problems are opportunities to grow and learn, to challenge yourself and others, and to rise above the situation. LEARN from them!

DISCOVER the #1 strategy in dealing with problems!

You have the ability to choose how you perceive any event in your life, and you exercise this power of choice in every circumstance, every day of your life. No matter what the situation, you choose how you react to it, and YOU are the person who gives events and situations meaning. We forger this sometimes... Did you know that there is no inherent meaning in anything- only the meaning that we assign things.Have you heard the prase "We are Meaning-Making Machines"? This means that as humans, we are always putting meanings onto things- all the time which also MEANS that we can CHOOSE the meaning we place (or don't place) on things. This is such a libertaing and POWERFUL concept. I know this may sound strange to you right now, but I assure you, when you understand this principle and “get it”- your life, and the way you approach problems and difficult situations WILL TRANSFORM! In Personal Growth Strategies, you will learn powerful techniques and strategies to empower you and help you take control of your life! Remember, YOU are the creator, director and STAR of the movie “YOUR LIFE”!

Perceptual Positions- a tool to see different perspectives for decision making and problem solving

One of the first things we learn about the world is that not everyone shares our point of view. To understand a situation fully, you need to see different perspectives, just as when looking at an object from different angles to see its length, width and height. One point of view only gives a single dimension. You build understanding from many perspectives. All are partially true and all are limited.

If at sometime you are having a conflict or problem with someone you may like to use what is called Perceptual Positions in order to gain clarity. Perceptual Positions- different perspectives for problem solving.

In this technique you mentally review a situation from a number of different standpoints in order to enrich your appreciation of what is involved

We go into this in much greater detail in Personal Growth Strategies, however here is a simple outline to help you:

  • Think of how you feel about that person and ask yourself what is the purpose of feeling this way about this person. Keep asking this question until you come to a positive.
  • Now imagine you are looking through the eyes of the other person and ask yourself what is the purpose of the behavior. Answer only from their perspective.
  • Now imagine you are a wise 3rd person observer looking at both people, what insights do you have about the situation?
  • Now , after looking at the situation from your perspective, the other person, and a NEUTRAL and WISE 3rd person, decide what action you want to take.

Cartesian Coordinates
The Cartesian Coordinate system was developed by the philosopher and mathematician Descartes during an illness. This questioning technique is one of my favorite tools because it is so easy to do. It has been used in quantum linguistics and is one of the tools and techniques used in problem solving and decision making. It helps you to see all sides of the situation and the consequences. I recommend using this whenever possible. (Don’t let the “math” aspect deter you- just answer the questioning…its easy!Write down on a piece of paper these questions and then answer…

1. What wouldn’t happen if you did X?

2. What would happen if you did ?

3. What would happen if you didn’t?
This allows you to access the outcome

4. What wouldn’t happen if you didn’t?
(* this question confuses the conscious mind therefore allowing the unconscious to intuitively conclude new answers).
