And...learn powerful techniques that will help you see different perspectives for decision making!

"Your ability to make good decisions and solve problems and conflict, is one of the keys to success in life."

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Individuals, groups or teams make decisions every day. Some decisions are very important and affect a number of people, whereas other decisions are small and affect only one or two people. Having a step-by-step decision-making process will help you to keep right track.

A decision-making process based on solid information leads to good decisions. Information is power. Often times our inability to choose or move forward is an indication that we do not have sufficient information, particulary when it pertains to decision making in the workplace. However, other times, in particular, in our lives outside of work, limiting beliefs and limiting decisions that we hold, may be the reason why making a decision can be difficult.

There are two main areas of the decision making process we will be exploring here. The first pertains to exploring what could be preventng you from making a decision. The second part I will be giving you the Decision Making Model Five Steps and other strategies you can use to make excellent choices and decisions.

Not Making a Decision IS DELAYING Your Life
Each time you delay a decision you are actually delaying your life. It becomes open to push and pull of circumstance. Circumstances can open your mind to doubt, doubt only deals with what has happened, never what can happen. Doubt interupts your decision process and introduces procrastination. It becomes a master of excuses and enables you to defend yourself when things do not work out for you. It is very important to recognize the excuses that pop into your mind when you are challenged.

Limiting Decisions and Beliefs
In this world, you ultimately receive exactly what you feel you deserve, no more, no less. What you believe and what you say to yourself has a tremendous impact on what happens to you and what kind of life you’ll lead. You are the creator, director and writer of the script called “YOUR LIFE”. All limiting beliefs are motivated by one central belief: you do not feel worthy of the goal (or what you want). All our limiting decisions can keep us from experiencing the full range of choices that we really have.  So many times, we wait to make a decision because we “do not want to make the wrong decision.” When you find yourself in this situation, remember that when you do not make a decision, essentially, you are delaying your life and not moving forward. So think about this for a moment.  What kind of beliefs do you have that limit you?  What kind of beliefs do you need to get rid of that will allow you to begin to express the magnificent person that you are?

Today there is clear evidence that focus keeps the mind clear of obstructions that block the flow of your energy. That is why I emphasize that you learn to identify what is motivating your decisions and your actions, since your decisions shape your entire life.

Decision Making Tips
In this section learn the Decision Making Model Five Steps and fantastic and easy strategies, including my personal favorite, called the Cartesian Coordinates. This is one helps you to see all sides of the situation and the consequences. Now let’s take a look at information-based decision making processes. The trick is to figure out what information you are lacking and then gather and analyze that information. Like any model, this is only a blueprint or a map to guide your through and it should not be a substitute for common sense and intuition. A good decision making model can aid problem solvers in making a sound decision while considering all the risks, advantages, and outcomes of a variety of scenarios.

5 Step Process for Decision Making

  1. Identify the issue Outline the objectives that a successful decision should address. Use the Perceptual Positions Frame if dealing with others. (see below Perceptual Positions).
  2. Determine the alternatives Think outside the box for creative alternatives. Innovative choices often lead to a higher quality solution. The preferred alternative is chosen based on careful analysis and the actual decision is made.
  3. Evaluate available alternatives Choose the best alternative. This third step is probably the most important. Examine factors that would impact a particular decision and also determine what implications a particular decision might have. Write down the pros and cons of each alternative (consider cost, time, ethical issues, goals etc.). Is it congruent with your values or the values of your organization?
  4. Implement the Decision - Take Action Just as important as making the correct decision is implementing it wisely and thoroughly. Address just what will be done to implement the solution, when it will be done, and who will do it. A successful decision is rendered useless when it's not carefully executed.
  5. Follow Up & Feedback Part of good decision making is giving it time to work. Make sure you review the outcomes and reflect upon the success of the decision and what was learned from the situation. If the problem or isue is still not solved or new problems arise, make the necessary changes and evaluate the outcomes

Perceptual Positions- a tool to see different perspectives for decision making

We go into this in much greater detail in Personal Growth Strategies, however here is a simple outline to help you:

  • Think of how you feel about that person and ask yourself what is the purpose of feeling this way about this person. Keep asking this question until you come to a positive.
  • Now imagine you are looking through the eyes of the other person and ask yourself what is the purpose of the behavior. Answer only from their perspective.
  • Now imagine you are a wise 3rd person observer looking at both people, what insights do you have about the situation?
  • Now come back into your own body and decide what action you want to take.

Cartesian Coordinates
The Cartesian Coordinate system was developed by the philosopher and mathematician Descartes during an illness. This questioning technique is one of my favorite tools because it is so easy to do. It has been used in quantum linguistics and is one of the tools and techniques used in problem solving and decision making. It helps you to see all sides of the situation and the consequences. I recommend using this whenever possible. (Don’t let the “math” aspect deter you- just answer the questioning…its easy!Write down on a piece of paper these questions and then answer…

1. What wouldn’t happen if you did X?

2. What would happen if you did ?

3. What would happen if you didn’t?
This allows you to access the outcome

4. What wouldn’t happen if you didn’t?
(* this question confuses the conscious mind therefore allowing the unconscious to intuitively conclude new answers).
